UPDATE: Middlebury boy, 16, killed in rollover crash, vehicle fire identified

Update: The victim was identified Friday afternoon as 16-year-old Gabe Bowers, a Northridge High School student.

A 16-year-old boy from Middlebury died when the vehicle he was driving rolled over several times, then caught fire.

The collision happened on County Road 39 near County Road 10 around 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

The teenager and his passenger were traveling on County Road 39 when the boy tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone approaching a hill, the sheriff’s department reported.

The teen swerved back into his lane to avoid oncoming traffic, but lost control of the vehicle, which rolled multiple times before coming to a rest on the roadway and catching fire, the sheriff’s department stated.

The driver died due to injuries he suffered from the fire.

The passenger was treated and injuries released at the scene.
