North Manchester man in custody after Monday morning crime spree

North Manchester Police say a man is in custody after battering a pregnant woman and attempting to steal multiple vehicles.

28-year-old Samuel Lopez of North Manchester is facing a slew of preliminary charges, including attempted murder, robbery, battery on a pregnant woman, and criminal confinement.

Authorities say when Lopez stole the car from Huck’s gas station on Wabash Road in the wee hours of Monday morning, a woman was still inside.

The North Manchester News-Journal reports the woman got out of the vehicle after being stabbed in the chest. She is being treated at a hospital in Fort Wayne.

Lopez then reportedly went to Strauss Veal Feeds and asked a semi driver for a ride. Police say he battered that driver at State Road 13 and State Road 114, then exited the semi.

Lopez tried to steal one more vehicle before being arrested. He’s being held in the Wabash County Jail.
