A couple in St. Joseph County is accused of kicking and slapping their child.

An 8-year-old girl went to her school counselor on Dec. 1 and said that her mother had kicked her that morning while she was getting ready for school. ABC 57 reports that she told the counselor she “couldn’t take it anymore.”

An investigation started from there and one of her siblings told investigators that her father slapped her so hard, he left a handprint on her cheek.

The mother was then questioned and, in addition to admitting to kicking the girl, reportedly admitted to holding a butcher knife to another child and threatened to cut her if she didn’t behave.

She was arrested along with the husband, who reportedly tried to tell police that she was going “too far” with her abuse.

We’re withholding the names of the mother and father to protect the victim’s identity.
