A Bristol man accused of shooting a man selling him marijuana is going to claim self-defense at his trial.

18-year-old Jerrod Spigutz will go to trial on Jan. 8 for murdering Jared Foltz outside of the Menards store in Elkhart. Court documents say Spitgutz shot Foltz when Foltz asked for his marijuana back.

The Elkhart Truth reports that his attorney told a judge Thursday of his client’s plans on claiming self defense. His attorney also re-iterated that he’s ready to go to trial. The prosecution is also ready to go to trial, though it was mentioned that a plea deal was recently offered to Spigutz.

Spigutz wasn’t present at this week’s hearing.
