Worst of the snowstorm over, bitter cold to take hold

(ABC 57 Meteorologist Emily Kennedy) A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for St. Joseph, LaPorte, Berrien, Cass and Elkhart counties until 7 p.m. on  Christmas Day.

Roads are snow covered and slick as of Monday, Dec. 25.

Some areas in Michiana, including the North Liberty area, reported receiving as much as 10″ of snow from the storm that began on Sunday. New Buffalo received 10″, LaPorte received 9.1″, Parts of South Bend received more than 6.5″, Nappanee received 5″, according to ABC 57.

A Travel Watch was issued by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for St. Joseph, LaPorte and Starke counties, meaning only necessary travel is recommended. A Travel Advisory was issued for Marshall, Kosciusko and Pulaski Counties, meaning drivers should use extreme caution.

Some main roads have been cleared but secondary and back roads will be snow covered through most of the day. Drivers are advised to allow plenty of travel time.

Lake effect snow continues in NW Michiana today with another 1-3” of snow possible in spots.

It should remain light but blowing and drifting snow will become problematic.

Lake effect snow could continue into Monday night, but will remain light.

Lows take a plunge into the single digits so anyone heading out to work Tuesday morning will need to bundle up.

Roads could still be slick in spots again on Tuesday morning.

Skies will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low teens. Highs remain in the teens through for the next several days with more snow chances.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST /6 PM
CST/ THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Light snow still occurring. Plan on difficult travel
  conditions. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches
  are expected today, mainly in Berrien and Cass Counties.

* WHERE...In Indiana, La Porte, St. Joseph IN and Elkhart
  Counties. In Michigan, Berrien and Cass Counties.

* WHEN...Until 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ this evening.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...West winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts as
  high as 35 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow
  today, especially on north south roads.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather
conditions are occurring. If you must travel, keep an extra
flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an
emergency.
