Camp Millhouse meets fundraising goal to purchase property

Good news for a longtime local camp…just in time for the holidays.

Camp Millhouse met its fundraising goal of $500,000 on Friday. That’s just in time to close on the purchase of the property it resides on.

The camp’s 25 year lease at its longtime home off of State Road 23 just southwest of South Bend was set to expire this Sunday. The camp needed to raise $500,000 to trigger a matching grant from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County to buy the property.

Camp Millhouse has been a South Bend area fixture since 1937 and serves people of all ages with disabilities.

The South Bend Tribune reports that staffers want to build new cabins and improve its health care center to better serve people with disabilities. They couldn’t do that, though, until they bought the property.
