Leaders in South bend met Thursday with members of the community to talk about the impact of synthetic marijuana in the community.

Statistics provided by Beacon Health System about the drug revealed that there were nearly 60,000 ER visits at Memorial Hospital in 2016, and about 1,000 of them were due to complications from synthetic marijuana. ABC 57 reports that, last year, that number went up to 1,300.

South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski called the situation “frustrating,” noting that this was a preventable problem, and a matter of supply and demand.

South Bend has banned the sale of the drug since last summer.
