Wooden Indian Motel bought by IUSB, to be demolished

The Wooden Indian Motel will soon become a thing of South Bend’s past.

Indiana University-South Bend has purchased the 66-year-old motel on Lincolnway West between Ironwood and Twyckenham. And for fans of the hotel, IUSB has no interest in continuing to operate the motel.

WSBT reports the motel was bought as part of a package deal that included a former gas station and other nearby vacant lots. The school plans to demolish the motel.

IUSB Chancellor Terry Allison says the school wants to “make the Lincoln Way corridor more welcoming to students, residents, businesses, and the community.”

The motel has had a checkered past of crime, including a South Bend police officer being killed in a shootout at the motel in 2007.
