SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – President Donald Trump has ordered federal assistance for Indiana because of late-winter flooding.

Trump made the disaster declaration on Friday. It makes federal funding available to people in counties affected by severe storms and flooding from Feb. 14 to March 4.

Eligible counties are Carroll, Clark, Elkhart, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Lake, Marshall and St. Joseph.

Assistance could include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property and other programs.

Federal funding is also available to state, local and tribal governments and some nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work or repair or replacement in an extended area covering 27 counties.

There’s also assistance available to the state for hazard remediation.

Additional designations may be made later.

Governor Eric J. Holcomb offered the statement below regarding President Trump’s disaster declaration:

“I saw firsthand the devastation in the northern and southern parts of our state as a result of these unrelenting storms. We’re grateful that President Trump quickly approved this disaster declaration to allow additional support and assistance for the Hoosier families and communities that were hurt the most.”
