ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A railroad is looking hire additional conductors at its facilities in Elkhart.

The Elkhart Truth reports that Norfolk Southern Railroad hopes to add up to 65 conductors, locally, by mid-2019. About 180 people currently operate the Elkhart-Chicago route.

More than 100 trains pass through Elkhart daily. Their individual cars are sorted on the yard’s more than 70 tracks and reassembled to send out agriculture, construction and automotive products.

The hiring push is a part of the company’s larger goal to add 1,800 conductors network-wide. Conductors are in charge of the train, freight and crew.

Nick Chamberlin is a corporate recruiter with the railway. He says conductors could earn up to $75,000 annually after their first year.

The company is also looking to add conductors at its Fort Wayne location.
