SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Demolition has started on a University of Notre Dame building that dates to the 1890s and is one of the oldest on the South Bend campus.

WNDU-TV reports crews with heavy equipment began tearing down Corby Hall on Friday. Corby Hall near the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was the traditional home of Congregation of Holy Cross priests who live and work at Notre Dame.

The late former school President Rev. Theodore Hesburgh lived in the hall for nearly 50 years and future football coach Knute Rockne lived there as a student.

Notre Dame officials say plans to renovate the yellow brick building turned out to be unfeasible. A new Corby Hall is expected to be completed in 2020.
