Man arrested for passing counterfeit money

A man has been charged with passing counterfeit bills and resisting law enforcement.

The victim in the case contacted South Bend Police about the funny money in May of last year. He’d arranged to sell a pair of Nike shoes for 100 dollars. They met at a gas station for the transaction, and the buyer, Malik Gardner, gave the victim two 50 dollar bills.

Gardner was someone the victim knew from high school, according to the report. The seller realized after Gardner left that the bills had “For Motion Picture Use Only” printed on them, and all bore the same serial number. Officers apprehended Gardner later that night, after he attempted to flee on foot from a home on Dubail Street. He had additional fake bills on him at the time.

Gardner has been charged with two counts of counterfeiting and one count of resisting law enforcement. Formal charges against Gardner were filed in June. He was arrested on Wednesday.
