The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Dylan McDaniel, 26, with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and possession of a controlled substance.

McDaniel is the suspect in a hit-and-run crash which claimed the life of a 54-year-old pedestrian on Friday, Aug. 31, at Michigan and Bowman Streets in South Bend.

According to court documents, McDaniel awoke on Saturday morning and told his girlfriend that he thought he might have struck a dog the night before. The two went to look at his vehicle and realized from the damage that it was not a dog.

The couple looked on news media sites, saw the reports of the hit-and-run and called the police, the court documents stated.

An officer searched McDaniel before taking him to the South Bend Police Department and found a pill in his pocket,  the court documents stated.

McDaniel was ordered held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail until his initial bail hearing and arraignment, which was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
