UPDATE: The names of the officers involved in the shooting of a suspect in South Bend on Monday, Sep. 24, have been released by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office who issued the following news release on Tuesday morning:
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) is releasing the names of the two officers involved in yesterday afternoon’s shooting in the 300 block of W. Marion St, South Bend.
Shortly after 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, plain-clothes officers from the South Bend Police Department observed a motorist who was driving erratically. That motorist was later identified as Kristopher Mingo Flores, 18. Mr. Flores’ vehicle pulled into the east lot of Frank’s Place, and the officers followed him in their unmarked vehicle. The officers exited their vehicle.
As the officers approached the vehicle, Mr. Flores allegedly exited his car and raised a handgun over his vehicle and pointed it at Patrolman First Class Randy Goering. Patrolman First Class Brandon Stec saw the gun pointed at his partner and fired at Flores, striking him. Both officers provided medical treatment until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. Mr. Flores was treated and released.
Flores was subsequently booked yesterday evening into the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary suspicion of Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon; Felony Possession of a Handgun without a License; and Pointing a Firearm. His arrest is under review by the St. Joseph County
Prosecutor’s Office and we anticipate a charging decision will be made today.
Both officers are assigned to the St. Joseph County Drug Investigation Unit (DIU). However, this incident is not in relation to any DIU investigation. The CMHU investigation remains active and ongoing.
ORIGINAL STORY: The South Bend Metro Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting in South Bend.
The shooting took place just before 4 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 24, in the 300 block of West Marion Street.
The incident began when two plain clothes police officers with the South Bend Police Department pulled over the suspect’s vehicle which investigators described as being driven erratically.
The suspect, Kristopher Mingo Flores, pulled into the parking lot of Frank’s Place.
The officers got out of their vehicle and approached Flores’ car. That’s when Flores got out of his vehicle and aimed a gun toward one of the officers, investigators said.
The officer’s partner then shot Flores.
Flores suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was treated at Memorial Hospital before being placed in the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and pointing a firearm. He was on probation for a robbery which took place in Michigan.
The officer involved was not injured.
County Metro Homicide investigators have been reviewing surveillance video of the incident provided to them by Frank’s Place.
Shooting in the 300 block of Marion is an officer involved shooting. Per protocol, County Metro Homicide will take over investigation. Person shot is at hospital seeking treatment. #southbend

Too bad those whimsically banned by Twitter didn’t get this real -time update or any other reports from civil servant agencies.
Govts can no longer use these “free” (faux) “services” now that the cat’s out of the bag that Twitter sought out govt agencies simply to get more ??? and not serve all the people these agencies serve and protect, using taxpayer’s dollars to do so!
Govt agencies need to do better by dropping any social media site, at least Twitter, as a PRIMARY/FIRST TIER means of informing the community now that these BUSINESSES have chosen to act according to their chosen political bent by preventing their “foes” from using their business to communicate.
Imagine if the phone company did that!
Drop Twitter if tax payer dollars are used to advertise on it cuz some taxpayers aren’t allowed to use the site!
Drop Twitter if communicating with ALL citizens matters!
Just stop using ‘social media’ altogether. It’s like pasting pictures of your family and friends on lamp posts with their home address and phone number. The internet (like this post) is NEVER private.
