A 40-year-old woman was shot and killed at Anderson Apartments in South Bend and authorities are searching for the man they say pulled the trigger and fired at officers who tried to stop him.

The shooting happened around 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, at the apartment complex in the 1500 block of Anderson Avenue.

When police arrived, an SUV was leaving the parking lot.

As an officer tried to stop the vehicle, the suspect, Anthony Patton Jr., fired out the window at the officer. The officer returned fire, but it is unclear if Patton Jr. was hit.

Officers pursued the suspect in his vehicle, but lost him on Bulla.

There were no officers hurt in the exchange.

The woman shot to death is identified as Tomara Agnew, 40. The initial initial investigation revealed that Patton Jr. allegedly shot Agnew after a verbal argument. Agnew suffered three gunshot wounds.

Around 10 a.m., heavy police presence was reported in the River Park neighborhood as police were searching at least one home in the area of 30th Street and Horne in connection to the shooting. The search of the home ended around 11:30 a.m. and police said the suspect was still at-large. As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, Patton Jr. was still being sought.

Patton Jr. is described as a black male, 23, approximately 5’8” and 150 pounds. He is believed to be driving a brown Chevy Equinox.

Anybody who believed they see him should not approach him, as he is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anybody with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911, South Bend Police at (574) 235-9201 or the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit at (574) 235-5009.
