Prosecutor: Elkhart man caused his own death while fleeing police

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office says a man from Elkhart caused his own death while fleeing from police.

Police say Michael Mattox, 31, accelerated when they attempted to pull him over on June 9.

Officers were responding to a report of a woman screaming for help in the area of Morehouse Avenue in Elkhart.

Mattox ran through a number of stop signs and signals while heading north on Main Street at speeds up to 90 miles per hour, according to the Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney.

He blew through the safety arm of a train stop just before a high-speed train arrived, and crashed into the post office, the prosecuting attorney stated.

He was found dead at the scene and an excessive amount of alcohol was reportedly found in his bloodstream, as well as meth.
