A South Bend woman was among four people hurt in a crash on U.S. 31 in Miami County.

Indiana State Police troopers were called around 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 28,  to a three vehicle crash on U.S 31 near Miami County Road 1200 South, in which four people were injured.

The preliminary crash investigation revealed that a 38-year-old woman from South Bend was driving a 2011 Ford Edge southbound on U.S. 31 near Miami County Road 1200 South.

Southbound traffic, on U.S. 31, was backed up because of a lane restriction for a work zone.

For an undetermined reason, the Ford failed to slow for the impending back up and rear-ended a 2009 Chrysler minivan. The van was driven by a 57-year-old Kokomo woman.  The crash impact caused the Chrysler to rear-end a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 58-year-old woman from Peru.

The South Bend woman and the two other drivers were taken to area hospitals for treatment and later released. A 63-year-old Russiaville woman who was riding in the Chrysler remained hospitalized in critical condition.
