LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says there will be no partial government shutdown next week now that the entire state budget is on her desk.

The administration emailed all 48,000 state employees Friday afternoon, three days before the deadline to enact the spending plans. There will be no temporary layoffs starting on Tuesday.

Department directors told workers that Whitmer “will be exercising the powers that she can to get our budget into the best possible shape with what has been presented.” She has line-item veto power.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the budget this week and last week despite not having a deal with the Democratic governor following a breakdown in talks over short-term road-funding.

A government shutdown seemed unlikely, but Whitmer’s administration had been planning just in case.
