Mishawaka Mayor gives update on how his city is handling COVID-19

Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood has spoken publicly for the first time since local COVID-19 efforts began. His city has largely stood alone opting not to declare travel advisories and not participating in county response teams. He said that is largely because people are doing a good job of policing themselves.

Like many small towns he is focused on making sure Mishawaka is ready when the economy opens back up. They are expecting funds as part of the CARES act which they intend to use to support local food banks.

There is one big problem they are dealing with; trash. There have been 615 extra tons of it compared to January and February. They are launching what’s been named Operation Quarantine Clean-up. It will focus on picking up larger items to get them off curbsides and out of alleyways.

What are we suppose to do yard clean up that has to be put in extra trash cans. Don’t tell us to put it in plastic bag. It makes holes in the bags and is hard to get it in bags. I feel this is a good way to stop picking up extra cans so that they don’t have to get out of the truck.
