Officer hands out gun locks at child’s funeral to prevent future gun tragedies

A nine-year-old boy was laid to rest on Tuesday after he was shot and killed while playing with a gun.

Mishawaka Police say Tra’Von Barnett and other children were playing with the gun on when it accidentally went off.

Mishawaka police officer Tim Williams attended Tra’von Barnett’s funeral.

He handed out gun locks to those who attended the funeral, so people can secure their guns safely.

Both Williams and Barnett’s family say they don’t want the community to go through another gun-related tragedy.

Having weapons in the home and teaching children responsibility and safe handling should be inseparable concepts. That goes for knives, hammers…anything capable of killing. That there were multiple children playing with a loaded gun speaks more to the responsibility (or lack of) of the supposed adults in the home.

I’m taking a wild guess here and betting those gun locks don’t get used because it doesn’t fit the culture. I’m also going out on a limb and saying no responsibility or safety training will be engaged in.
