Michigan taxpayers targeted in recent scam

An aggressive scam is making the rounds in Michigan, specifically targeting taxpayers with past-due debts.

In the scheme, taxpayers receive a letter about an overdue tax bill, asking them to immediately contact a toll-free number to resolve the outstanding debt.

The letter threatens to seize the taxpayer’s assets, including property and Social Security benefits, if the debt isn’t settled.

The state Treasury Department says taxpayers who receive a letter from a scammer, or have questions about their debts, should call the Treasury’s Collection Services Center at (517) 636-5265.
