Coronavirus cases are climbing, and a local hospital system is looking for a refrigerated truck to store extra bodies.

Beacon Health Systems, which has facilities in both South Bend and Elkhart, says that while not every death is coronavirus-related, officials are worried the virus-related deaths will push them over the edge.

WSBT reports between the months of March and September, 29 people died at Elkhart General Hospital due to coronavirus complications. Within the past month, 27 more COVID-related deaths have been reported at the same hospital.

Dr. Michelle Bache, Elkhart General’s vice president of medical affairs, says that while many people who come down with COVID-19 survive, about 10 percent of those who are hospitalized will pass away.

Officials with the Saint Joseph Health System confirmed they have a refrigerated truck on-site, but it’s just there as a precaution. It has yet to be used during the pandemic.

So what is the point of this article if they already have a refrigerated truck? If it has never been used and isn’t in use now what’s the problem? More scare tactics by our local media trying to win “journalism” awards. Sheesh!
