A well-known utility company is doing its part to help curb food insecurity among children and families.

The American Electric Power Foundation, on behalf of Indiana Michigan Power, plans to donate $126,000 to Cultivate Food Rescue, which aims to fight hunger through food rescue in South Bend.

The grant money will specifically go toward the organization’s Backpack Program, which ensures children in St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall Counties have food on weekends.  Children receive six frozen meals per weekend through the school year.

In total, the donation will help provide 63,000 meals to local children.
