South Bend Police tapes hearing to take place on Thursday

(Tommie Lee/MNC)

A case involving tapes where South Bend police officers were recorded will take another step forward on Thursday, May 6.

A new motion filed in the South Bend “police tapes” case claims a group of current and former police officers do not have legal standing to challenge the release of the South Bend Police tapes. The South Bend Tribune reports if the motion is approved, it may eliminate the need for a trial and a ruling could happen on Thursday.

St. Joseph County Superior Court Judge Steven Hostetler will preside to decide whether a trial should occur to decide whether certain secretly recorded conversations of former and current South Bend police officers can be made public.

Some investigators believe the tapes have recordings of officers making racist comments and discussing illegal activity.

The trial was supposed to happen in December, but it got pushed to May because of the pandemic.

This nonsense has went on far to long
South Bend is a joke!
South Bend police department is a public office .
Using public owned equipment .
Unless someone’s life is in danger it should be public info
The only one laughing are the lawyers who’s pockets are getting fatter .

Indiana is a “one party consent” state when it comes to recordings, so if even one of those parties was privy to the fact that they were being recorded then the recordings are legally obtained and should be released.

If nobody in the conversation knew they were being recorded, the tapes were illegally made and should not be released.

I really don’t understand how any of this is difficult. The moral of the story is: don’t say stupid stuff, someone might be recording you.
