Use of deadly force and other policy changes for SBPD still under discussion

The South Bend Police Department says proposed policy changes further define when deadly force can be used by officers.

The use of force policy was passed in February, and a number of updates have been discussed with city officials and the department in the ensuing months.

The Board of Public Safety reviewed the changes again at a meeting on Wednesday. South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski told The South Bend Tribune that he feels all of the changes to the policy’s language are a strong step forward.

Ruszkowski said “After a careful balance of all interests, we were able to come up with what we feel is almost spot-on.”

The board did not vote on the revisions at Wednesday’s meeting, in order to give board time to review the changes.
