Reaction as Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 4.1%

Indiana has a 4.1 percent unemployment rate for July (the last month measured), which was the same for the previous month. But, even though Indiana is doing comparatively well with getting people back to work, there are still some employee shortages.

“I think you’re seeing people go back to work, but there’s still, without question, a shortage,” said Gerry Dick, with Inside Indiana Business, talking to WIBC’s Tony Katz. “You look at the tech companies and the need for programmers and other specific skills that they need in the tech community, advanced manufacturing.”

Dick said people are also needed in other sectors, like logistics and distribution.

“A lot of companies continue, and certainly in the restaurant business, in some of the more moderately-paying or lower-paying jobs that fuel the hospitality industry, that continues to be a big issue, too,” he said.

But, as far as unemployment goes, Indiana has done better than Illinois, which is at over seven percent unemployed, but not as well as Wisconsin, which stands at 3.9 percent.

“Just anecdotally, you’d look and say Indiana’s holding its own when it comes to the economy and jobs and getting people back to work.”
