A misplaced cell phone led a South Bend Police Captain through a set for circumstances that resulted in him saving a woman’s life.

It was back on Dec.15 that Police Captain Joe Leszczynski reported for his shift, only to realize his phone wasn’t in his pocket.

After searching his car and a few other spots, he headed back home to check if he left it there.

As he approached State Road 23 and Crumstown Highway, he spotted an unconscious woman being pulled from a vehicle.

He pulled over, began performing CPR, and relayed his location to a 911 dispatcher while performing chest compressions.

Leszczynski was able to regain the victim’s pulse as medics arrived and the woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Leszczynski has now received The South Bend Police Department’s Lifesaving Award, which goes to those who show exceptional courage in order to save lives.

As for his his elusive phone, it turns out… his wife had grabbed it by mistake and put it in her purse.
