Latest: MI behind-the-wheel cell ban stalling in Lansing

A proposed ban on cell phones behind the wheel in Michigan has been put in park for the moment.

House Bill 4250, the first part of the three-bill package that would ban cell phone usage in the state while driving, was unable to get the support of the majority in the chamber on Tuesday.

Last week the bill sailed through the House Transportation Committee by a unanimous vote.

Members from both sides of the aisle voted against the bill, with critics calling the proposal top harsh, and disproportionately affecting low-income Michiganders.

If the legislation is able to pass, Michigan will become the 26th state with a ban on hand-held electronics behind the wheel.
