A new distracted driving law in Michigan will take effect on Friday, June 30.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed into law a bill that makes it illegal to hold and use a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle in Michigan.

Texting while driving is already illegal in the state, but the new law makes all cell phone usage illegal while driving.

That means no more phone calls, sending or reading of text messages, viewing or recording videos or accessing social media sites.

Drivers can use their GPS, but only if it is hands-free. Michigan is the 26th state in the country to establish the hands-free driving law.
