Two crashes in South Bend are believed to be related.

Both crashes happened Sunday, July 9, and started as some sort of domestic problem between a husband and wife.

The first collsion happened near Jefferson Boulevard and 26th Street and involved a domestic situation between a husand in one vehicle, and his wife in another.

Police say the GMC and Dodge Charger were bumping into each other on the road, which eventually caused the GMC to go off road and hit a pedestrian who was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Charger kept going down the road and caused another crash a mile away. Police say the husband tried taking off from the scene but was taken into custody. Both he, and his wife, suffered minor injuries.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following information:

On July 9, at approximately 1650 hours, the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated to respond to a collision that occurred near the intersection of Jefferson Blvd. and 26th St. involving two motor vehicles and a pedestrian. The driver of vehicle one, Rashad D. Williams, 26, of South Bend, Indiana, was traveling westbound on Jefferson Blvd., and the driver of vehicle two, Kala L. Williams, 25, of South Bend was also driving westbound on Jefferson Blvd. Vehicle one collided with vehicle two, which caused vehicle two to leave the roadway and strike Nicole L. Arnold, 39, of Mishawaka, who was walking on the sidewalk. Mr. Williams then fled the scene and caused a collision with three other vehicles at the intersection of McKinley Hwy. and Twyckenham Dr. He then fled on foot and was quickly apprehended by officers from the South Bend Police Department.

Late last evening Ms. Arnold passed away due to her injuries.

Mr. Williams was booked in the St. Joseph County Jail for multiple charges including, Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash, Leaving the Scene of an Injury Crash, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash and Reckless Homicide. Charges are expected to be filed within the next 24 hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team.
