The Humane Society of Elkhart County has been at capacity for cats, so what happens next for the shelter?

Maria Waltersdorf, Community Development Manager at the Humane Society says that the announcement was made almost three weeks ago. Since then, the numbers have gone down a bit.

“We’re still pretty full but not as full as we were. A couple of weeks ago we were at 175 cats… as of recording we were at 158 cats.”

Those numbers change everyday, depending on which cats have been adopted and if more furry friends have been brought to the shelter.

Waltersdorf says that it’s kitten season, which leads to a lot more cats headed to the shelters, “spring and summer is when most cats are having litters.”

With this influx of cats, the Humane Society is always looking for donations. Waltersdorf says that “a big one is monetary dentations.”

The cats are waiting and ready to be taken home. They come vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered.

The Humane Society is practically giving away cats and dogs for free for the rest of the month.

Waltersdorf says that until July 31st, it’s even cheaper to adopt a cat from the shelter, “through the end of the month, the Bissell Pet Foundation is actually sponsoring empty the shelters, so all adoptions are free.”

But, during August, you can still add a furry friend to your family. Cats are $10 to adopt and dogs are $25.
