Canadian cash no longer accepted at Mackinac Bridge starting Oct. 1

One of the few businesses or agencies in the US that accepts Canadian currency will soon stop doing so.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced on Tuesday that they will stop accepting Loonies and Twonies, and all other forms of Canadian cash, starting October 1.

They say the decision is based on the relatively limited use of the currency by customers, and the administrative costs associated with the currency exchange. The bridge is about an hour from the Canadian border at Sault Ste. Marie, and therefore not an international crossing.

The bridge authority also says the majority of its Canadian users pay with a card instead because they get a better exchange rate, usually half what they would pay using cash.
