Michigan’s State Board of Education has voted unanimously to ask for clarity on the constitutionality of a new education agency.
The new education agency was created by Governor Gretchen Whitmer by executive order last month.
The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential would take on some key functions of the Michigan Department of Education, according to Bridge Michigan.
The board’s resolution says the state Constitution places leadership and supervision of public education in the elected board and that overlapping may occur between the existing education department and MiLEAP.
While Whitmer says the agency was created for lifelong education in the state, some board members believe adding another department would bring chaos and confusion.
