Michigan DNR says Recreation Passport sales have increased since pandemic

The Michigan DNR says Recreation Passport sales have gone up since the pandemic.

The passport system was created in 2010, allowing drivers renewing their license plate to pay an additional fee that allows them to access state parks for free for an entire year.

Nearly a quarter of Michigan vehicles had a passport in 2011.

DNR parks and recreation chief Dan Olson says during the pandemic, many people spent a lot of time outdoors.

WSJM says camping revenues also shot up in 2021, and that a record number of yearly parks passes were sold during the same year.

Sales have increased because of the change in law that makes a recreational passport required for parking lots that weren’t previously required. ORV riders now have to have a recreation passport to park in the trailhead parking lots that the increase in ORV licenses fees was supposed to pay for. That is ridiculous. We are going to see a decrease in out of state residents riding ORVs in Michigan because of this.
