New legislation in Michigan is looking to disarm domestic violence offenders for eight years.
There are two bills in the State’s House, and another two in its Senate, They take aim at the ability of anyone convicted of those crimes to own, use, or buy a firearm. Those affected would regain that right after eight years.
WSBT reports that nearly half of all women killed in the U.S. die at the hand of a current or former intimate partner, with more than half of those deaths due to a firearm. State Senator Stephanie Chang says current state laws in Michigan leave open a loophole that can be exploited by abusers.

Hmm, Lets see, Murder is not deterred by the law against murder. How does anyone in Michigan or anywhere else think this law will stop domestic violence. Recently the federal court overturned a conviction of someone accused domestic violence because there was not enough to take a guaranteed civil right. Did Michell Lujan Greshem become governor in MI?
Domestic Violence laws are stupid in general. I understand the intent, but at the end of the day why should someone get in less trouble for striking a total stranger than they get into for striking their wife?
It’s silly. Assault is assault, it’s time to do away with these special classes for laws.
Aren’t you disqualified from owning or purchasing a weapon on a Federal level if you have a domestic violence conviction?
Don’t live with a partner who loves or hates you, depending on their changing mood swings. It’s better to live alone in a shoe box in the woods, than live with someone dangerously violent.
