School ESSER funds from pandemic expire in one year

(953 MNC)

The clock is ticking on schools nationwide to use their remaining pandemic relief funds.

ESSER funds were established to support schools during the pandemic through the 2020 CARES Act.

As of July of this year, FutureEd reports that Indiana has spent 51% of their ESSER funds, with Michigan spending 61%. Most states have used around 60% on average.

The funding expires in September of 2024, meaning schools relying on those funds will have to find other ways to fund programs being supported. More than half of the nation’s school districts used ESSER funds to support tutoring programs.
