Property tax relief may be coming to older Hoosiers in St. Joseph County.
The county council considered an ordinance at Tuesday night’s meeting that would place a cap on property taxes for people 55 and older.
There is already a cap on property taxes for people 65 and older.
Supporters of the plan say the cap would be 4-percent of what your currently pay in taxes.
They say if your property is assessed higher than that 4-percent, you would be forgiven the difference. The ordinance was tabled for now while councilors continue to study the measure.
