A new baby box will soon be found in the Michiana area

The Goshen Board of Public Works approved the installation of a new baby box at the Goshen Fire Department’s Central Station on Second Street.

There are currently over 100 baby boxes in Indiana, though the only one in Elkhart County is at the Cleveland Township Fire Department. Since the program first began in the state, 29 babies have been surrendered using the boxes.

Some concerns were brought up during the meeting, focusing on liability, financial responsibility and insurance liability, and emphasizing the fact that Indiana already allows the right to surrender a baby anonymously at any hospital, police department or fire station.

In the end, however, the board unanimously voted in favor of the agreement for the Safe Haven Baby Box.
