Elkhart firefighters contain blaze in North Bay Drive garage

(Bill Beck/Elkhart Truth)

The Elkhart Fire Department responded to a garage fire on North Bay Drive around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the attached garage. The residents were already safely outside.

The first unit quickly controlled most of the fire, stopping it from spreading to the main house. However, propane tanks in the garage vented gas due to heat, delaying full extinguishment until the tanks were empty.

The main part of the home sustained smoke damage, but the fire did not spread significantly. The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
