Amtrak plan to demolish coaling tower in Michigan City draws outcry

A century-old landmark along the tracks between New Buffalo and Michigan City is in danger of being demolished.

It’s visible from Red Arrow Highway: An old 100-foot tall coaling tower looming over the tracks that hasn’t dumped coal for trains since the 1950s. WSJM reports that Amtrak, who owns the tracks, are planning to demolish the structure in September of 2025.

Some residents in Michigan City are upset at the thought of losing a piece of local history, and a petition is circulating on Change.org to try and save the structure. They say the tower has historic value and should be preserved.
