Additional warming centers in South Bend open beginning Sunday night

Due to dangerous wind chill temperatures starting Sunday night, the City will open overnight supplemental warming centers on Sunday (1/19), Monday (1/20), and Tuesday (1/21) nights.

Individuals seeking shelter overnight should check in at Weather Amnesty at the Center for the Homeless (813 S Michigan St.). After checking in, individuals will be transported to the supplemental sites.

The supplemental warming sites are as follows:

  • 8pm Sunday, January 19- 8am Monday, January 20: Broadway Christian Parish (1412 Carroll St.)
  • 8pm Monday, January 20- 8am Tuesday, January 22- Howard Park Event Center (219 S St. Louis Blvd.)
  • 8pm Tuesday, January 21- 8am Wednesday, January 22- Howard Park Event Center (219 S St. Louis Blvd.)

The City’s normal warming center locations and times will still be available to utilize to individuals who need it. Those warming center locations and times include:

  • Charles Black Community Center (3419 W Washington St.)
    • Monday-Thursday: 9am-9pm
    • Friday: 9am-5pm
    • Saturdays and Sundays: CLOSED
    • MLK Day (1/20/2025): CLOSED
  • Howard Park Event Center (219 S St. Louis Blvd.)
    • Monday-Thursday: 8am-8pm
    • Friday: 8am-10pm
    • Saturday: 9am-10pm
    • Sunday: 11am-8pm
    • MLK Day (1/20/2025): 8am-8pm
  • O’Brien Fitness Center (321 E Walter St.)
    • Monday-Thursday: 5am-9pm
    • Friday: 5am-7:30pm
    • Saturday: 6am-3am
    • Sunday: 9am-2pm
    • MLK Day (1/20/2025): 5am-9pm

Other non-City locations that can be utilized as warming centers include:

  • St. Joseph Public Library (304 S. Main St.)
    • Monday-Thursday: 9am-8pm
    • Friday and Saturday: 9am-5pm
    • Sunday: 1-5pm
    • MLK Day (1/20/2025): CLOSED
  • Century Center (120 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.)
    • Seating and restrooms open to the public. Limited hours.
  • United Way 1Roof (405 E Dubail Ave.)
    • Monday-Friday 8am-5pm
    • MLK Day (1/20/2025): CLOSED

The First UMC (333 N. Main St.) will also be providing special warming center services on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (1/20/2025) from 1-6pm. Food, health care resources, and grooming services will be available. Individuals can enter on Madison St. and come down to the soup kitchen area.
