Elkhart Police // Alyssa Foster

A woman was pronounced dead Sunday night following a shooting near the intersection of 6th Street and Hively Avenue.

The Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received reports of gunshots around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26. Shortly after, an unconscious woman, identified as Fernanda Leon, 18, of Osceola, with a gunshot wound arrived at Elkhart General Hospital by private vehicle. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

On Monday morning, Police responded to a home in the 2700 block of South 6th Street as part of the investigation. An hour-long standoff at that location ended just before 6:30 a.m. when a man and woman came out of the home with their hands up. Police searched the man and took him into custody. It’s unclear if they arrested the woman.

The investigation remains active, and police say additional details will be shared as they become available.
