Indiana’s House of Representatives approved a water-based cremation alternative on Thursday, despite some religious opposition.
Representative Mark Genda, a retired funeral director, noted that while he plans to be buried next to his parents, about 60% of Hoosiers are opting for cremation.
His Senate Bill 1044 aims to legalize alkaline hydrolysis, a process that uses water, alkaline chemicals, and heat to break down bodies into bone fragments, by adding it to Indiana’s definition of cremation.
