Hoosiers call on Gov. Braun to help close affordable housing gap

(95.3 MNC)
The Hoosier Housing Needs Coalition, consisting of nearly 500 individuals and organizations, is urging Governor Braun to create a housing commission to address the state’s housing affordability crisis.
A new report by Prosperity Indiana reveals that Indiana needs 140,000 affordable rental units to meet demand, with only 38 available homes for every 100 vulnerable families.
Advocates are concerned about federal cuts to housing programs and services, warning of potential homelessness if affordable housing is not expanded.

Why is any of this the taxpayers’ problem? Maybe instead of throwing tax dollars at it, we should look into the rules and regulations that are preventing the construction of affordable housing?

We had an issue recently in South Bend that highlighted a great example of the cause of the problem. There were low-rent apartments that lived up to the name, and the tenants complained to the City who then forced a lot of expensive repairs and renovations. Suddenly those low rent units were worth $1000/month, and shock of shocks people were getting evicted in favor of tenants who could pay what those units were worth.

“You get what you pay for” cuts both ways. People need to get past the idea that a $400 a month apartment should be as nice as a $1000 unit.
