Teen critically injured in South Bend crash; Driver suspected of impairment

A 17-year-old girl was critically injured Sunday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck while walking on a sidewalk with family members.

The crash happened around 1:18 p.m. at the intersection of Mishawaka Avenue and Longfellow Avenue. South Bend Police officers responded and found the teen with life-threatening injuries. She was transported to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

According to initial reports, the driver of a Toyota Tacoma, identified as 38-year-old Gregory Michael Durling of South Bend, struck the girl before crashing into the exterior wall of a nearby building.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was called to the scene to investigate. Preliminary findings indicate Durling showed signs of impairment. He was not injured and was taken into custody at the scene. He is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail as charges are pending.

The investigation remains ongoing.
