Fire crews responded to a structure fire early Saturday morning in the 200 block of Crescent Street, where a kitchen blaze caused significant damage to a two-story home.
The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched at 6:01 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke coming from the residence. The first arriving unit reported light smoke visible from the rear of the structure. Firefighters made contact with the homeowners, who confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the building.
Crews entered the home and quickly located and extinguished the fire in the kitchen. The blaze was brought under control within 10 minutes. A total of four engines, one aerial truck, and four other vehicles responded to the scene.
Utilities, including gas and electricity, were shut off as a safety precaution. A search of the residence confirmed no one remained inside. Firefighters also completed ventilation and overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully out and the structure safe.
No injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents. The home sustained approximately $20,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in damage to contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
