Indiana lawmakers have passed a bill banning marijuana dispensary ads, responding to complaints from residents near the Michigan border.

WSBT reports the new law, part of a motor vehicle bill, bans ads in all forms, including billboards, mailers, digital ads, and mobile trucks. It takes effect once Governor Mike Braun signs it.

The bill addresses concerns that constant marijuana ads were confusing residents, some of whom believed marijuana had been legalized in Indiana. However, dispensaries like Green Stem in Niles, Michigan, signed long-term billboard contracts just before the law passed. These ads will remain until 2035.

Violations of the law will result in fines starting at $5,000, with repeat offenses carrying fines up to $15,000.

Enforcement will begin as soon as the governor signs the bill.
