Fatal officer-involved shooting in Michigan City ruled justifed

A special prosecutor is ruling that the actions of a Michigan City officer who fatally shot a South Bend man during a pursuit in April 2025 were justified.
The man who was shot was identified as Jorge Meza, 21.
On May 29, the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s office found that the officer, identified by Michigan City Police as Sgt. Michael Oberle, was legally justified in using deadly force to defend himself during the incident on April 4.
Oberle is a 15-year veteran of the department. The case is now closed and he faces no charges.
