The Indiana State Police is investigating an early morning police pursuit that ended with a suspect ramming a police vehicle, an officer firing his weapon, and a foot chase through a nearby field.

According to state police, the incident began around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, when a Warsaw Police officer attempted to stop a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. The driver fled, leading police on a brief pursuit that ended near State Road 13 and County Road 150 North.

Investigators say the suspect slammed into a stationary Warsaw Police SUV as an officer was exiting the vehicle. The officer suffered a leg injury and was later treated and released.

Moments later, the suspect turned the truck around and rammed the same police vehicle a second time. During this encounter, the officer fired one round from his department-issued handgun, striking the Silverado but not injuring the driver or his passenger.

The suspect then ran into a nearby field but was captured shortly after by a Warsaw Police K-9 unit without further incident. The passenger, who complained of pain, was treated and released from Kosciusko Community Hospital.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Lance Walter of Mansfield, Ohio, was taken to the Kosciusko County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of Attempted Murder and Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle.

The Indiana State Police is reviewing body and dash camera footage, conducting interviews, and processing evidence. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The identity and duty status of the involved officer have not been released.
