The South Shore Line has issued a reminder that a fare increase is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, following approval by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Board of Trustees. The fare adjustment is part of the South Shore Line’s long-term strategy to continue investing in its infrastructure, customer experience, and operational reliability.
Michael Noland, President of the South Shore Line, emphasized that the increase, which marks the first fare hike in over seven years, is necessary to address the rising costs of maintaining and improving commuter rail services while ensuring safe and efficient transportation for riders.
As part of the fare changes, the South Shore Line is offering increased discounts on multi-ride tickets. The discount for 10-ride tickets will rise from 5% to 10%, while 25-ride tickets will see an increase from 10% to 20%. These adjustments aim to provide better value for frequent riders, especially those who now commute to Chicago fewer days per week. “We hope these increased savings offer added value to our frequent travelers,” Noland said.
Additionally, the South Shore Line will continue to offer monthly tickets, which provide a 33% savings based on a 21-day work month. This option is most beneficial for riders who use the service 18 days or more in a single month.
Passengers are also reminded that many employers participate in Section 132(f) transit benefit programs, allowing employees to pay for transit using pre-tax dollars. This benefit can save riders up to 40% on commuting costs, with the South Shore Line accepting Transit Benefit cards at Ticket Vending Machines and through the South Shore Line mobile app.
As part of the fare adjustments, the Buy One, Get One promotion for monthly tickets will be discontinued.
